Rabbi Adam Feldman

One may not tear, nor lay bare, nor are they offered refreshment, except by the relatives of the dead; and they offer refreshment only on an upright couch. And they may not bring to the house of the mourner on a tabla, nor in an iskutla nor in the kanon, but in baskets. And they may not recite the mourners' blessing during the Moed, but they stand in the row and they console and they dismiss the public.

This Mishnah is concerned with the situation when a funeral takes place during the intermediate days of a festival (Passover or Sukkot) but Shiva and Shloshim have not yet begun because it is still the Festival. The Rabbis thought about many specific situations during this time including whether the mourner should wear a torn garment, the meal for mourners, how or if mourners should greet people or be greeted and whether the mourner should join in the Kaddish if s/he is in synagogue and the Mourner's Kaddish is recited. The opinion of most authorities was that observance of these customs should not begin until after the conclusion of the Festival. Many people may find these rulings difficult especially the delay in reciting the Mourners Kaddish for almost an entire week. As in the previous situations we have studied, public displays of mourning are discouraged until the Festival is over.

This week's Mishnah lesson was written by
